Free smoke alarms again available through FBFD program

Designed to offer a measure of fire protection to seniors and those otherwise unable to afford smoke alarms, the Farmers Branch Fire Department will be kicking off "We're Out To Alarm Texas" smoke alarm campaign for the second consecutive year.

A joint project of the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office and the Insurance Council of Texas, the program will fund 100 new First Alert dual sensor smoke alarms to be installed in homes beginning Fire Prevention Week, October 7.  The installation program will continue through March 1, 2008.

Farmers Branch Fire Marshal Tim Dedear explained that during last year’s smoke alarm campaign, the fire department installed 160 new smoke alarms in the City.  During that process, approximately 69 existing smoke alarms were tested.  Of those, 23 alarms did not work, 45 were more than 10 years old, and 16 alarms were in need of new batteries.

"’We're Out To Alarm Texas’" smoke alarm campaign will provide a positive impact on the citizens of Farmers Branch by saving lives, reduce property losses, and provide quality fire protection to our seniors and residents who otherwise are unable to afford smoke alarms,” Chief Dedear stated.

Seniors and those unable to afford smoke alarms should contact the Farmers Branch Fire Department at 972-919-2640 for eligibility information and to sign up for the program.  Smoke alarms will be installed by Farmers Branch Fire Department personnel on a first come/first served basis.

Chuck brings whimsy to annual calendar

With the goal of bringing a smile to the face of readers in the new year, Chuck the Duck was chosen as the featured performer for the 2008 Farmers Branch calendar. Chuck spent much of the year in photo shoots around the City in an effort to highlight City locations, services and events - all with a touch of whimsy and humor. “A Duck in the City,” the 2008 Calendar came out in mid-December and remains available, while supplies last, free of charge at any City facility.
